Frequently Asked Questions
Incoterms (International Commercial Terms) are a set of internationally recognized rules published by the International Chamber of Commerce (ICC) that define the responsibilities of buyers and sellers in international trade. They clarify who pays for shipping, insurance, customs, and at what point the risk transfers from seller to buyer.
Ex Works (EXW) is an Incoterm where the seller makes the goods available at their premises. The buyer bears all costs and risks of transporting the goods from the seller's location to the final destination, including export clearance, loading, shipping, and import duties.
FCA (Free Carrier) means the seller delivers the goods, cleared for export, to the carrier nominated by the buyer at a specified place. The seller is responsible for export clearance and loading at their premises, while the buyer assumes all risks once the goods are handed to the carrier.
FOB (Free on Board) means the seller delivers the goods on board the vessel nominated by the buyer at the named port of shipment. The risk transfers from seller to buyer once the goods are loaded onto the vessel. The seller handles export clearance and loading costs.
The key difference is the point of risk transfer. Under FOB, risk passes when goods are loaded on the vessel (only for sea/inland waterway transport). Under FCA, risk transfers when goods are handed to the carrier at any named place, making it more versatile for all transport modes including air and road freight.
CIF means the seller delivers goods on board the vessel and pays for the cost of freight and marine insurance to the destination port. The risk transfers to the buyer once goods are loaded, but the seller covers insurance and shipping costs to the named port of destination.
DAP (Delivered at Place) means the seller bears all risks and costs of delivering goods to a named destination. The buyer is responsible for import clearance, duties, and unloading. The seller handles everything up to making the goods available for unloading at the agreed destination.
DDP (Delivered Duty Paid) places maximum responsibility on the seller. The seller delivers goods to the buyer's named destination, cleared for import, with all duties and taxes paid. The buyer only needs to unload the goods. This is the opposite of Ex Works (EXW).
DDU (Delivered Duty Unpaid) — now replaced by DAP in Incoterms 2010 — means the seller delivers goods to a named destination but the buyer is responsible for import duties, taxes, and customs clearance. It was commonly used before DAP was introduced.
